Construction Begins at Powhatan Park
At long last, construction is underway at Powhatan Park in the Powhatan Farms Community in Lochearn. This 1.5 acre property will feature a lawn area for active recreation, a play/gathering area, a native wildflower meadow, a native flowering tree grove and a native perennial meadow designed to attract pollinators. The park will also have a stone dust trail accessible from the two roads in the neighborhood that dead-end at the park. In addition, the trail will provide an improved connection to Powhatan Elementary School. The trail was a feature of high importance to members of the Powhatan Farms community that participated in discussions about the park's design.
Two teams of students from Morgan State University's Graduate Program in Landscape Architecture participated in working with the community on a suitable design for the park. The students incorporated the community's desire for a walking trail and flexible recreational space into their final design, along with site constraints, especially stormwater run-off from the adjacent roadways.
County Executive Kamenetz successfully sought bond funding in the amount of $150,000 from the Md. General Assembly for the project. With that funding, NeighborSpace sought project bids in summer 2016 and awarded the project to Natural Concerns and DMW, both Baltimore County firms, in fall 2016. The project should reach completion this fall. Stay tuned for an announcement about a ribbon-cutting ceremony!
