"Together ... we've turned an eyesore into a thing of beauty." (Aaron Barnett, President, PFIA)

TRANSFORMED LANDSCAPES. TRANSFORMED COMMUNITIES. TRANSFORMED LIVES.

That's What a Gift to NeighborSpace Buys.

When the Powhatan Farms Improvement Association (PFIA) reached out to NeighborSpace in 2007, they were short on open space but not on vision. They knew about a site, which if subdivided and acquired would give their community of 250+ homes a much-needed "back porch." They wanted  “a park with … flowers, and an area that would allow our community to have cookouts and possibly hold our monthly community meetings during the good weather months.”  They also wanted a walking trail that would connect two roads dead-ending at the site and an improved path to the nearby elementary school.

Using $120,000 in open space waiver fees that come to NeighborSpace via a County ordinance, the organization successfully completed the subdivision and purchase of the site, shown at left in 2008. Then the hard work of realizing the community's vision began.

With the help of our donors, $150,000 in bond funding, the perseverance of the PFIA, and the expert assistance of the Morgan State University Graduate Program in Landscape Architecture, Powhatan Park became a reality in 2017. A transformed landscape, one that, not only provides the recreational components the community desired, but also treats stormwater runoff and provides habitat for pollinators, resulted.

A transformed community, one where people and the environment are healthier and where home values are enhanced is the ultimate goal. Transformed landscapes, transformed communities, transformed lives - that's what a donation to NeighborSpace buys. Please help us create more places like Powhatan Park today!
